Eva Selamlar(1)-2

Zurich – ETH spin-off Eurospider Information Technology AG is expanding its management team: Eva Selamlar will take over as co-CEO alongside founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors Peter Schäuble on 1 December 2025. Together, they will lead the company into its next phase of growth with a focus on combating money laundering and terrorist financing.

With Selamlar's appointment, Eurospider is responding to the growing demand for technological solutions in the fight against financial crime. The experienced FinTech and RegTech specialist is regarded as a strong implementer who quickly identifies market needs and consistently translates them into practical solutions. She will lead the strategic development of  the KYC Spider  business unit.

“The requirements in financial crime management are changing rapidly. Technological expertise, data intelligence and regulatory understanding are the keys to success,” says Eva Selamlar. “Eurospider combines these strengths and is ready to set new standards.”

Peter Schäuble, founder and co-CEO, emphasises: “With Eva Selamlar's many years of experience in fintech and financial innovation, we are expanding our expertise and creating a strong, forward-looking leadership duo. The co-CEO model ensures the continuity of the company's development with entrepreneurial spirit and innovative strength.”

Luka Müller-Studer, member of the Board of Directors of Eurospider and founder of Sygnum and MME, adds: “Eurospider is a prime example of Swiss technology with international relevance. With Eva Selamlar and Peter Schäuble, the company is sending a clear signal for a growing future market.”

Eurospider employs 18 people and serves over 500 customers with its intelligent digital platforms, including those in the financial sector. Company Outing
In beautiful autumn weather, the Eurospider team headed to the Grimsel world. We took the bus through the picturesque Haslital valley to the Grimsel Hospice. There we were met by the guide from Kraftwerke Oberhasli AG (KWO), who told us exciting things about the world of electricity generation and storage. Alongside Emossen and Linth-Limmern, Grimsel is one of Switzerland's large pumped storage power stations, which can balance out electricity shortages and surpluses (e.g. from photovoltaics). He also reported on the complexity of raising the new dam. After the tour and a light snack, we continued on foot up to the Gelmer dam. The Grimselbahn, the steepest funicular railway in Europe, took us back down to the valley safely and spectacularly.

Overview of last year's Federal Court rulings on the Anti-Money Laundering Act

Last year (2024), the Federal Court handed down a total of thirteen rulings in the area of money laundering and financial offences. Four of these rulings are particularly noteworthy as they concern the duty of care of financial intermediaries.
A first ruling (6B_271/2022) showed that banks have joint responsibility for due diligence obligations when verifying the identity and origin of clients' funds. In another case (7B_685/2023), it was emphasised that without the necessary authorisation from FINMA, a violation of the AMLA can be established, as the registration and authorisation rules are infringed. Another important ruling (2C_1010/2022) confirms that banks are entitled to identify beneficial owners and pass on their information in the context of international administrative assistance. The importance of due diligence for financial intermediaries and the link to fraud scandals is also emphasised once again in another ruling (7B_982/2023). Ultimately, it was decided that a seizure notice did not constitute sufficient grounds for presuming a risk of money laundering.

Thomas DA-3

Vector indexing of Federal Supreme Court rulings - 13 November 2024

Thomas Murphy presented a report at workshop DA-3 on the effectiveness of LLM-based search methods for finding relevant Swiss Federal Supreme Court rulings. In order to determine the quality of the search, i.e. whether relevant judgments are actually found or not, it is essential to have a test collection. Thomas uses a Eurospider test collection comprising 123 test queries for which the relevant judgments are known. He compared the search efficiency of different methods in terms of their performance and accuracy. After numerous experiments, an improvement was achieved on the test collection thanks to a combination of LLM-based vector search and textual search optimised for legal information.
